Mentors That Get It

Unify Portland’s objectives focus on eliminating disparities of black and brown youth in the justice system, to support these youth in learning to work together, and reduce violence in our communities resulting in greater public safety.

We provide culturally responsive mentoring services for youth in the Juvenile Justice system using Restorative Justice Practices. We look at the whole child to support the youth in learning how to make better choices and we nurture intentional sustainable relationships to provide guidance that can help the youth to developing exceptional life changing pro-social skills.

Our vision is to establish relationships with youth in detention and maintain those relationships through the duration of their sentence to help them prepare for transition successfully back into their communities. Youth gain empathy for people who have been harmed and learn how to right their wrongs while realizing that their mistakes do not define who they are.

These mentoring relationships emphasize caring, collaboration, education support, accountability, community and peer support.

Our justice system is punitive and lacks equity while society often has bias towards youth of color. Culturally specific services for over represented Black and Brown youth in our juvenile system address these disparities and create a foundation for youth to learn, change and thrive.
